Help with Hockey Shoot-out

Most questions are answered below. For anything else, email contact@stacksy.com.au and a person will reply, usually within a working day.

The 8-second timer

Tap the green card on the home screen. The whole screen is the tap target: touch it the moment the whistle goes. It floods green and counts down in tenths; at 8.0 it flips red, beeps three times and buzzes. Tap again to reset for the next attempt. While it is running, taps are ignored so a brush of the hand cannot kill a live count; use the small Reset in the top corner to abort.

The same timer is also at shootout.hockey/timer for any phone with a browser. Add it to the home screen and it opens full screen.

Setting up a shoot-out

Teams

Give each team a name and a colour. Players are optional: add them one at a time with a shirt number and, if you like, a name, or use Add a block of numbers to add 1–16 in one go. Mark goalkeepers with the GK tag. A team with no players listed just has its numbers typed as each attempt comes.

Squads

Each team names five attackers and a goalkeeper for the shoot-out. Only they appear in the pickers. If a keeper is replaced or an attacker is hurt, change the squads from the ⋯ menu on the live screen without restarting.

The toss

Choose who won the toss and whether they chose to attack or defend first. There is a coin in the app. Then Start the shoot-out.

Running it

The live screen shows the score, five dots per team per set, and whose turn it is. Pick the attacker (or type a number), check the keeper, tap the timer block when the whistle goes, then tap Goal or No goal. The turn moves on by itself.

  • Retake ordered records the attempt but it neither scores nor uses up the turn. The same attacker stays selected and comes straight back up.
  • Awarded as a penalty stroke is for when the keeper offends and the attempt is taken from the spot. Enter who took the stroke (any player) and, if they changed keeper, who defended it. Then record Goal or No goal as usual.
  • Undo the last attempt is in the ⋯ menu. Earlier attempts can be corrected (number, result, stroke details) from All attempts, but not reordered or removed.

The first five is decided as soon as the other side cannot catch up. Level after five each and the app goes into sudden death: the order flips, and each pair of attempts decides. If a set of five pairs passes without a decision, another set starts with the order flipped again.

The record

When there is a winner, tap Finish. The record shows the winner, the dots for each set and every attempt in order. Share sends a plain-text version by Mail, Messages or any app; Copy puts it on the clipboard for the match report. Past shoot-outs stay on the home screen; press and hold one to delete it. Reopen puts a finished shoot-out back on the live screen if something was missed.

Sound

The beep at eight seconds plays as media, so the phone's mute switch does not silence it. If you hear nothing, turn the volume up and check no other app has taken over audio.
