Timer

Green from the whistle. Red at eight.

The whole screen is the tap target, so it works without looking at the phone. It floods green and counts down in tenths; at exactly 8.000 seconds it flips red and beeps.

  • Counted off the clock, not a chain of ticks, so it never drifts and comes back right if the phone locks.
  • Stray touches are ignored while it runs. A small Reset in the corner aborts.
  • Three sharp beeps pitched to cut through a crowd and never mistaken for a whistle, plus a buzz in the hand.

The same timer sits as a block on the live screen, so the table keeps entering numbers around it.

The shoot-out

From the toss to the winner, one tap per attempt.

Set it up in the five-minute break, then run it without thinking about the arithmetic.

Teams and squads

Names, a colour, players with shirt numbers, or a block of numbers in one tap. Each team names five attackers and a goalkeeper. No list? Numbers are typed as they come.

The toss

Who won it and whether they chose to attack or defend first. There is a coin in the app if nobody has one. The order flips every set after.

Goal or no goal

Whose turn, who is attacking, who is keeping, the eight seconds, then one tap. Retake if the umpire orders one. Undo if a thumb slips.

Sharks win the shoot-out 4–3

Five dots each, per set.

The first five is decided the moment the other side can't catch up. Level after five each and it goes to sudden death: the order flips, and each pair decides. Still level after five more pairs? Another set, flipped again, until somebody wins.

Attackers who have taken their turn in a set grey out until the next one. The keeper stays picked between attempts.

Rules

Retakes, strokes, the record.

The parts of the shoot-out that trip up a table under pressure are the parts the app does for you.

  • A retake stays on the record but neither scores nor uses up the turn. The same attacker comes straight back up.
  • Awarded as a penalty stroke when the keeper offends: any player may take it and the defending side may change keeper for it. Its result is still the attempt's result.
  • The record lists every attempt in order, with who took it, who kept, and how. Share it or copy it as plain text for the match report.
  • Corrections without restarting: fix a number, change a result, edit the squads, or undo the last attempt.

The rules engine is the same one that decides shoot-outs in PIVOT TMS, so a result recorded here agrees with one recorded at a tournament table.

FAQ

Questions umpires and technical officials ask

Can I just use the timer?

Yes. It is the first thing on the home screen, and it also runs at shootout.hockey/timer in any browser with nothing to install. Add that page to your home screen and it opens full screen.

Which rules does it follow?

The FIH shoot-out competition: five attempts each, alternating; the toss winner chooses whether to take the first or the second; decided early once the other side cannot catch up; then sudden death in sets of five with the order flipped each set. Retakes and attempts awarded as penalty strokes are handled as the rules describe.

Do I have to enter the players?

No. A team with no players listed has its shirt numbers typed as each attempt comes. Listing them means one tap per attacker and the app stops the same player going twice in a set.

Does it work with the screen locked or the phone in a pocket?

The screen stays awake while a shoot-out or the timer is open. The count is taken off the clock, so if the phone does lock mid-count the timer is still right when it comes back.

Will it beep on silent?

Yes. The cue plays as media, so the mute switch does not silence it. Turn the volume up.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere. Shoot-outs are saved on the phone and shared only when you tap Share. There is no account and no server. See the privacy policy.
